Explore key milestones in the rich history and ongoing development of Birdtail Sioux First Nation, highlighting our enduring resilience and progressive vision.

As Chan Kagha Otina Dakhóta Oyáte, Birdtail Sioux First Nation has occupied these lands since time immemorial. We are a Dakota Nation, not signatories to any Treaty with Canada, with a history deeply rooted in traditional knowledge and spiritual connection to our unceded territory.

On January 4, 1873, an Order-in-Council authorized the setting aside of reserve lands for the Dakota Sioux Nations in Canada, including Birdtail Sioux, marking a formal step in the Crown's administration of our lands, though without a Treaty.

A significant milestone in enhancing community well-being, a new Birdtail Sioux Health Centre facility was constructed and opened, greatly expanding vital health and community-based programming for our members.

In March 2017, Birdtail Sioux adopted the First Nations Election Act, strengthening our self-governance. This period also saw a historic moment on July 15, 2024, when Canada delivered a formal apology to Dakota Nations for longstanding injustices, marking a step towards true reconciliation. In 2025, Tréchelle Bunn made history as the Nation's first female Chief.
